About 100 former NHL players from Hall of Famers to those who sometimes played in the long shadows cast by the legends will be saluted Monday when the NHL Alumni Association holds its 2017 awards gala and dinner in downtown Toronto.

Craig Cunningham a former NHL forward who nearly died on the ice with Tucson of the American Hockey League last year will be presented with the Ace Bailey Award of Courage named for former NHL forward Garnet “Ace” Bailey who died in an airplane in New York on 9/11.

And the hugely popular Canadian band The Tragically Hip will receive the inaugural Honorary Alumni award which for one day gives an individual or group membership in the NHLAA without the honorees having played an NHL game.

The gala will be the first major NHLAA event under former NHL goaltender Glenn Healy who was named executive director in June. Healy won the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994 and played 15 seasons in the League.

Former players scheduled to attend the gala include former Toronto Maple Leafs and Rangers goalie Johnny Bower and Detroit Red Wings icon Ted Lindsay. Fellow Hall of Famers Paul Coffey Rod Gilbert Rod Langway Bryan Trottier and Dave Andreychuk the latter to be inducted Nov. 13 will also take part as will scores of players whose accomplishments large and small will be celebrated.

Lemieux follows Yvan Cournoyer a 10-time Cup winner with the Montreal Canadiens as the association’s Man of the Year.

Healy said Lemieux accepted gracefully if a little grudgingly when informed he was being honored saying as Healy relates it “I don’t like to do these things.”

“I told Mario ‘You’re hockey royalty and you’re the guy who should be it for the NHL’s 100th year,’ ” Healy said. “He laughed and told me “It’s the only trophy I’ve won before Wayne (Gretzky).”

Healy lauded McCreary for her work behind the scenes for the NHLAA taking after her father.

“Wendy has taken more calls in the dead of night about players in peril and has helped more people in her life than I’d say anybody in the association,” he said. “Her dad started our organization and she’s worked tirelessly fighting for every single person who’s needed help.”

The story of Cunningham who went into full cardiac arrest on the ice before a game in Tucson on Nov. 19 2016 touched the hearts of hockey and people far beyond it his life saved by trainers doctors and by firemen who incredibly happened to be members of a bagpipe and drum band performing the national anthem that night.

Cunningham 27 had his left leg amputated but his courage and recovery have made for an inspiring story. In April wearing a prosthetic leg he returned to the ice for a skate with the help of physical therapists and former Tucson teammates.

“This kid I tell you all he wants to do is meet Mario,” Healy said of Cunningham who played 63 NHL games for the Boston Bruins and Arizona Coyotes between 2013-14 and 2015-16. “He’ll be part of an NHL team again. He’ll coach somewhere someday.”

Healy said there was no second choice for the Honorary Alumni award The Tragically Hip having been selected weeks lead singer Gord Downie died of brain cancer last Tuesday at age 53. Downie Healy recalled would drive from Kingston Ontario to the summer skates of various NHL players sleeping in his car hoping to find a spot to play.

“It’s hard to play one game in the NHL,” Healy said. “This world has given so much back to hockey why not honor those who have helped along the way? The Hip have done [a lot] for hockey in so many different ways. They’re the first Honorary Alumni of what will be many.”

Some other notable predictions from the season simulation include:

The Pittsburgh Penguins, led by captain Sidney Crosby, continue their dominance of the Eastern Conference during the regular season and take home the President’s Trophy. NHL18 cover athlete Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, for the second year in a row, becomes the most decorated athlete at the NHL Awards, with back-to-back wins of three major awards – the Hart Memorial Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. McDavid joins an elite group of multi-year winners of these coveted awards, including Hockey Hall of Famers Guy Lafleur and Wayne Gretzky.Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning will take home the Conn Smythe Trophy for an exceptional post-season performance, as well as the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as highest goal scorer.

In their inaugural season, the Vegas Golden Knights fall short a playoff spot finishing 14th overall in the Western Conference.

NHL 18’s release date, cover athlete, and major gameplay details were revealed at tonight’s NHL Awards in Las Vegas. Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid, who is coming off a sensational sophomore season, will be on the cover.

As was detailed in a survey a couple months back, NHL 18’s biggest addition is a new mode called “NHL Threes,” which features super high speed three-on-three gameplay in a small rink that is perfect for breakaways.

In addition to regular couch multiplayer, NHL Threes will include online support as well as an EASHL variant in which you can team up with your friends. There will also be a single-player mode in which you unlock players, arenas, and mascots as you progress.

Some other additions to NHL 18 include:

● New dekes and a brand new defensive skill stick that lets you more freely sweep away pucks. The advanced dekes require fighting game-like inputs, but they will allow top players to do things like reliably slide the puck between the legs of a goalie.
● An expansion mode that will allow you to step into career mode with a customized team of your choice. The available options will be similar to last year’s team relocation.
● A handful of AI improvements that let them do things like bank the puck off the boards.
● Hockey Ultimate Team, Online Versus, and NHL Threes will all support online or couch co-op in virtually any combination.
● Hockey Ultimate Team will also include new solo challenges that are likely to be similar to those found in Madden NFL, which have proven popular with fans.

NHL 18 will seek to rebound in the midst of a tough generation for the series. When I reviewed last year’s version, I lamented that it was stuck in a bit of a creative rut. While Madden 18 is making the transition to Frostbite this year, NHL is sticking with its current engine.

The EA Sports NHL franchise is finally taking their video games to the next level. As NHL 17 nears the halfway point of its game life, one thing is very clear: They are working to make the best game possible. Although the NHL developers may not do things effectively all the time, this year’s additions have been a breath of fresh air.

While the current edition is better than NHL 16, there are many features that need to be added to the next edition. If these following additions show up in NHL 18, it will be one of the best NHL video games to date.

NHL 18 Improvement: Revamped HUT Draft Champions Mode
Draft Champions was the biggest addition to NHL 17. In this mode, you can draft a team of the best players in the world and play online to earn draft collectibles. These collectibles can be used to unlock high-overall players to be used in regular Hockey Ultimate Team seasons. Even though the mode was well received, Draft Champions wasn’t updated in the first four months of the game’s cycle. That’s not only a major waste of time but a huge letdown for NHL fans everywhere.

In NHL 18, fans will be looking for constant updates. In both FIFA and Madden, their Draft Champions modes are constantly updated as new HUT cards come out. This helps players figure out who they like to use to build their own Hockey Ultimate Team. As long as Draft Champions is updated on a weekly basis it will be a home run.

On top of the updates, Draft Champions needs a more competitive side. The EA NHL developers will need to add a pay-to-play side to help advance the mode. Madden’s recent “Madden Bowl” was a $250,000 Draft Champions tournament that garnered significant attention. If NHL can add on a ranked section of Draft Champions that requires coins to enter, that could be their first big step into making it onto the eSports scene.

Fewer HUT Packs, More Offline Attractiveness
NHL 17 HUT is fairly mundane. While the additions to HUT throughout the year have been good, the only constant has been the special HUT packs. Instead of focusing on constantly selling packs, the NHL developer team needs to worry about giving the game depth. No NHL game in the last half-decade has had depth and playability. If NHL 18 includes offline features such as Solo Challenges (from Madden), it will have a much lengthier shelf life.

With Solo Challenges being the best offline feature in any major sports game, how could it be added? Older NHL players will remember Moments Live. If the developer team added back Moments Live with rewards including packs and coins, they’d be doing themselves a favor. Nobody likes to play a game that revolves around spending money. If they make a more grind-friendly game, NHL 18 could be the highest-selling NHL game in years.

Remove Desyncing, Looping, Booting
If you’re not particularly familiar with the NHL series, desyncing and looping are the biggest problems within the game right now. Desyncing and looping are both major glitches within the gameplay that come after stopping play and overwhelming the game’s inputs. If someone desyncs your game, it could be hours until you can get back online to play NHL 17. It’s extremely frustrating to play an entire game only to get thrown off of the EA servers due to a glitch in the mechanics.

Booting is an even bigger problem across video games. With peer-to-peer connections, the IP addresses are easily retrieved by anyone with certain software. In NHL 17, your opponent can boot you offline and leave you with a loss and Internet problems. While this issue isn’t overly prevalent in NHL, it’s easily avoidable. If the EA NHL 18 developers could access dedicated servers for games, there would be no fear of being booted offline anymore.

Finally, Fixing Random Error Codes
In NHL 17, there is a slight chance that you can be thrown off the servers at any time without doing anything wrong. After being stuck on a “Waiting For User” screen, you’ll be teleported back to the menus and given an error code. These error codes have yet to be noticed or explained, leaving it a likely possibility that they will reoccur with the next rendition of the game.

Imagine going to the grocery store and shopping for a week’s worth of food. As you’re getting ready to check out and move on with your day, your cart vanishes into thin air. It may be a stretch but, feels like an equal waste of time to get an error code during a game. For the people that don’t play the game very often, this is just another reason not to buy it. If casual fans stop purchasing the game, the NHL franchise will see fewer sales than this year.

NHL is a series of game that does not require any introduction. With every new version of the game reaching the top it has created a huge fan . When the new version is about to launch, fans will always be excited because they expect to see what new features it will offer . With NHL 18 set to be released next, expectations run high. The fans of the game have their own wish list that they hope will be fulfilled in this edition. Let us take a look at what the fans hope to see in NHL 2018.

A FEW CHANGES
NHL 17 is an impressive game that gives players a lot of fun . However, there are always a few tweaks and changes here and there that can do wonders. Fans have suggested some of the changes that they feel will make the game all the more interesting.

CHANGING THE CELEBRATION MODE
The cup celebration seems to have been the same from the beginning, which has gotten monotonous. Thus, a change in this regard would be welcome and would make it more interesting for the players and add more value to their victory. There could also be an option of allowing the players to skate around with their cup. An option can also be given to hold the cup high in the air to enjoy the victory. This would give the game a realistic touch.

COACHING
It would be interesting if the players could choose to hire or fire the coach . This will give them full control and ensure they can choose how much they are willing to assign to the team coach. With the budget that is given to them, They can hire or coach according to their preferences . This will give them the opportunity to participate more in the game .

NHL 18 CAREER MODE
It would be interesting if you were selected from the same team as the world cup, and you belong to NHL 18 which often gives the game a new dimension.

Therefore, developers should strive to provide them with fresh things, while maintaining the core concept of the real game.  Fans suggest that many of the changes may not be practical or may be difficult to implement , But a little bit of change is all that will be taken to reach the next level of popularity of the game . Therefore, this is what developers should strive for, and  the results will not let them down.
